On July 29, 2015, four Indians were detained at a checkpoint near Sirte, which is now held by the militant group. Two of them were released soon after.

Swaraj said, ”I am happy to inform that T Gopalakrishna [AP] & C BalaramKishan [Telangana] who were captive in Libya since 29 July 2015 have been rescued.” The men were on their way back to India through Tunisia and Dubai when they were abducted. All four men used to work at a university in Sirte.

In 2014, 39 Indian workers were abducted by the same group from the Iraqi city of Mosul. Despite several government advisories, around 2,000 Indians remain in war-torn Libya, where local forces are fighting the terror group, according to Hindustan Times.
